There’s a certified hierarchy in the shoe kingdom.

Certain shoes are all about comfort. Others, like the beloved knee-high boot, are worn to add fashion statement. The last group are those that are kept for the sake of stylish functionality.

Combat boots are a classic staple. They are not going anywhere anytime soon.

These boots are a classic indeed, going back as far as the 1800s and taking off in popularity in the last decade. Chunky platforms, like Doc Martens, are the preferred boot by the fashion crowd.

How To Wear Combat Boots

Since a pair of combat boots toughen up any look – there are a few ways to approach this footwear- depending on one’s personal style.

Tucked in or out of jeans or trousers, worn with flowy dresses, or sometimes with a hooded sweatshirt, the classic pair has shown serious styling capabilities.

Scroll below for inspo on how to wear combat boots.

1. Trousers

The best combat boots are comfortable, provide traction for those slick sidewalks, and are downright stylish.

Generally categorized with a lace-up design, or a lug sole design – the combat boot trend has no signs of slowing down. They can be seen in varying heights, from ankle to mid-calf and even knee-high, for the truly daring.

The versatile shoe can be worn with a pair of leather pants to add a bit of edge to the luxurious fabric.

Due to its flat or platform sole, the classic style is a comfortable approach when it comes to winter boots.

Their classic black color palette makes them versatile enough to work with almost any outfit, from casual to formal.

No one piece defines utilitarian chic quite like the humble cargo pant and the exceptionally streamlined shoe style works with the slouchy fit of the pants.

Given how combat boots used to be synonymous with the punk scenes, it is quite refreshing to find different ways to wear the fall staple.

Pair the boots with wide-leg trousers and a floor length coat for an unexpected combination that is daring, yet chic.

The easiest way to add interest to tonal outfits is by incorporating heroic staples into your look.

To add more casual look to a blazer and black pants combination, swap out heels or flats for black boots for a laid-back approach to the refined pieces.

2. Skirts

The juxtaposition of a toughened-up shoe with an elegant maxi skirt is one fall fashion trend that is a perfect pairing.

Gone are the days of the homely maxi skirt.

Maxi skirts are now sleek, and on trend. A bomber jacket and combat boots elevate the simplicity of the skirt.

Just because it is cold outside, doesn’t mean you can’t wear mini skirts.

Spice up a classic black mini skirt by picking boots and a *very* oversized poplin shirt to accompany the look.

For the perfect weekend look for brunch, add a blazer and baseball cap.

3. Jeans

While combat boots look great with trousers and skirts, that’s not to say they can’t also elevate a pair of jeans.

Thanks to the timeless look of Doc Martens, you can rewear your pair of leather combat boots every season, breaking them in perfectly over time.

4. Dress

Rather than leaning into the hard edge inherent to combat boots, go the opposite direction for a cozy and compelling look with a sweater dress.

A sweater dress is the close cousin of the little black dress, but is luxurious and soft.

If you’re looking for something that makes more of a statement, reach for a monogrammed pair of tights that embodies quiet luxury.

Beyond the ease of wear, sweater dresses pack a lot of versatility in a single piece, whether styled for relaxed moments with comfortable boots or amplified with a blazer for date nights.

5. Sweatpants

Some days, instead of reaching for a pair of boyfriend jeans for comfort, a pair of sweatpants are a better option.

A stylish and easy way to style sweatpants is to go for a cohesive look with a matching jogger set.

A coordinated set are proof that casual comfort and polished style don’t have to be mutually exclusive. For those cold days, finish off with a teddy coat and combat boots to battle the harsh winter weather.

If sweatpants are not for you, dip your toes in the loungewear pool by adding elevated pieces. A trench coat achieves a put-together look with minimal effort.

For an extra layer of warmth, throw a sweater over the shoulder.

6. Leggings

A pair of faux leather leggings instantly makes any look cool.  To amp up the edgy factor, add a leather jacket.

The ankle boots and an oversized sweater take the look from casual to stylish. It’s a look that expertly blends hard and soft elements for a visually appealing look.
