When I was pregnant with my first child, I was convinced that my favorite dresses and trousers would have enough stretch over the next nine months but I was so, so wrong.

In fact, maternity clothes shopping was one of the highlights of pregnancy. Shopping really helped distract from that constant nausea and trying to conceal my pregnancy with prairie-like dresses. Y

our changing body means that your skinny jeans and straight leg jeans will likely be replaced with a pair of maternity leggings and maternity jeans.

Cute Maternity Outfits

Regardless of the maternity clothing, you still have to put together cute maternity outfits that fit your growing belly.

The best way to approach pregnancy dressing is to first evaluate your current wardrobe and see what can comfortably adapt with your body, then add in a few pieces that—and this is the crucial part—you would buy regardless of your incoming baby.

Dresses are an easy one step outfit, and can easily be sized up to fit all pregnant women. Tailored blazers left open over baby bumps or leather jackets are great ways to add shape and polish to an otherwise shapeless dress.

Cardigan + Pants

Rather than splurge on new pregnancy clothing items that you’ll never wear again after birth, invest in carefully selected clothing and incorporate them into your maternity wardrobe.

Show off you personal style with monochromatic piece sets starting with plisse pants.

The lightweight, loose-fitting, wrinkle-proof fabric is a great way to incorporate comfortable clothing that is not just sweatpants.

Top + Leggings + Sneakers

Besides a pair of maternity denim, a pair of maternity leggings is a necessity.

These bump leggings can be the foundation to every maternity outfit imaginable—from long sleeve tops, spring coats, graphic t-shirts, to a sheer blouse and wide fit heels for a night out.

A classic, high-quality, stretch jersey pair is a must, but don’t overlook fabrications, such as ribbed cotton, or even leather styles for colder months.

Blazer + Top + Jeans + Sneakers

During my own pregnancies I tried my hardest to be the sort of person who “didn’t buy maternity clothes”—and while that worked for dresses. I was able to avoid maternity dresses, but it most definitely did not apply to jeans.

There are some pregnant women among us who don’t even venture into the “maternity jean” category.

Any of the looser silhouettes or anything with an elastic or tie waistband could easily go below a bump and continue to inch further down as the months go on.

Coat + Tee + Jeans

Over-the-bump jeans have a rather large amount of cotton or elastic fabric attached to the top of them can feel very intimidating in the earlier stages of pregnancy, but will feel very necessary by the end.

Baggy, slouchy maternity were my top choice of jeans towards the end of my pregnancy.

I seem to recall describing the first pair of over-the-bump size jeans I tried on as “claustrophobic,” but by the end of my pregnancy they were the only ones I could wear. Finish off with a baseball cap and structured handbag for a relaxed vibe.

Overalls + Clogs

Maternity overalls can be very appealing – and they are an important part of stylish maternity clothes.

It’s an easy outfit that’ll make you feel like the best version of your (very comfortable) self. With a roomy and unstructured fit, adjustable tie straps, and side pockets—could a pregnancy outfit get any better?

Jumpsuit + Sandals

A cotton jumpsuit is a great place to start when you are looking for a flowy and comfortable maternity outfit.

The ever-expandable material leaves plenty of room for the bump, even at nine months, and looks super flattering at the same time.

The jumpsuit is perfect for a growing belly now and feeding your little one later.

Button Down + Romper + Sneakers

A romper has the same comfort as black sweatsuits, but the same appeal as biker shorts. They are sleek, comfortable, and above all, the perfect one-piece outfit for pregnancy.

The black bodysuit presents a wide range of options of how to style the piece.

Finish off with a white button down and sneakers for casual look around town. For a dressier look, pair with metallic heels and a leather blazer for a sharp going out look.

Cardigan + Skirt + Sandals

Knit dressing has become one of the most adopted trends and it appears the look is here to stay. Besides it being trendy, it is one of the best places to start for dressing up during a pregnancy.

The stretchy, body-hugging knits are of the most versatile staples. The ribbed knit skirt can go from baby shower to post-partum without skipping a beat.

Sweater + Skirt + Flats

There’s no better way to get out of a pregnancy rut and stay ahead of the fashion curve than by choosing a sleek silk or satin skirt.

The sumptuously smooth garment feels dressier than leggings or jeans, but still has enough versatility to be dressed up or down by pairing the old money piece with flat sandals or sneakers.

Dress + Sandals

Other than the aforementioned maternity jeans, I was able to keep to my pre-baby wardrobe by sticking with dresses, particularly long sleeve dresses to hide my pregnancy arms.

To me, this was the ultimate solution to “maternity dressing”. Dresses present a wide range of options for cute pregnancy outfits.

Easy to throw on, dresses typically don’t have much in the way of zippers or buttons so there should be plenty of give wherever you need it.

These boldly colored occasion dresses are the perfect addition to a spring or summer pregnancy wardrobe.

Rather than buy maternity specific clothing, buy certain size clothing that you wear regardless of the shape of your current body.

A maxi dress, particularly black dresses, are the perfect example.  These dresses are also ideal for the final countdown stages of pregnancy, as they will have enough space in the flowy material to cover your blossoming bump.

Maxi dresses will grow with your body, and you can return to them after pregnancy.

Dress + Mary Janes

Sweater dresses might not seem like the best option for a growing baby bump but once the bump has made its’ official appearance, a tight knit dress is actually the ideal way to show off the bump.

A fitted knit piece is also a great option for a special occasion dress, when you need something to wear that is festive, yet comfortable.

Ribbed white dresses would work for a bridal shower or for any special occasions. Finish off with wide fit shoes, such as Mary Janes, for your growing feet.
